Ayurvedic Name: Kapal Kushth
Description:
Kapal Kushtha is a skin disorder where the affected area becomes thick, dry, rough, and cracked, resembling a skull plate (Kapal). It is resulting from an imbalance of Vata and Kapha, which leads to loss of moisture, rigidity, and dark pigmentation. The skin loses its flexibility, often causing pain and stiffness. Due to the excessive dryness, it may peel or develop deep fissures. This condition correlates with Ichthyosis or Chronic Dermatitis in modern medicine. Ayurvedic treatment includes Panchatikta Ghrita, Manjishtha, and Triphala for internal detoxification, while external applications like Neem oil and Khadirarishta help in skin healing. Detoxification therapies like Virechana (Purgation) and Raktamokshana (Bloodletting) may also be advocateed.
Signs & Symptoms:
Kapal Kushth presents with Kushta (Skin Lesions), which are often reddish or white, appearing on the skin in the form of patches or ulcers, and can be numb. The skin becomes Rukshata (Dry), thickened, and rough due to the chronic nature of the condition. There may be Kandu (Itching) or discomfort in the affected areas, accompanied by Sotha (Swelling) around the lesions. Vata dosha imbalances cause Shotha (Inflammation) and lead to numbness or Gaurava (Heaviness) in the affected areas. Agnimandya (Poor Digestion) is also common in individuals with Kapal Kushth, leading to digestive discomfort and weakness.
Diagnosis:
Genetic testing for ichthyosis genes
Risk Factors:
- Dietary Factors: Consuming spicy, hot, or greasy foods can increase inflammation and cause Kapal Kushth (chronic skin disorders). A diet lacking in essential nutrients like vitamins and minerals, or a high intake of sugar and processed foods, can weaken the immune system and contribute to skin diseases.
- Lifestyle Factors: Poor hygiene, exposure to harsh chemicals, and prolonged stress can worsen the symptoms of Kapal Kushth. Lack of sleep and sedentary habits can also exacerbate skin conditions.
Complications:
- Skin Infections (Kapal Kushth): Chronic skin conditions caused by persistent irritation, leading to the formation of boils and ulcers.
- Scarring (Sharir Dagh): Deep scars left on the skin as a result of untreated skin disorders.
- Dry Skin (Twak Rukshata): Excessive dryness and peeling of the skin due to long-term inflammation.
Epidemeology:
Kapal kushth (Chronic Skin Diseases) is a result of long-term skin irritation, infections, or inflammatory skin conditions. It is more prevalent in individuals with compromised immune systems or poor personal hygiene.
