Ayurvedic Name: Sidhma
Description:
Sidhma Kushtha is a Vata-Kapha disorder characterized by thin, dry, scaly patches on the skin that resemble flower pollen (Sidhma). It starts as small, white, flaky spots and later spreads in clusters, causing mild itching. This condition closely resembles Pityriasis Versicolor, Pityriasis Rosea, or Mild Psoriasis. Ayurvedic management includes internal detoxification with Panchatikta Ghrita, Triphala, and Arogyavardhini Vati, while external applications of Neem oil, Turmeric paste, and Khadirarishta help in exfoliating dead skin cells. Swedana (Steam therapy) and Udvartana (Dry powder massage) improve circulation and skin healing.
Signs & Symptoms:
Pundarik presents with Rukshata (Dryness) of the eyes, leading to irritation, and Vata dosha involvement causes Shotha (Swelling) of the surrounding tissues. The eyes may also experience Sankocha (Constriction) or blurred vision due to impaired tear production. There is often a sensation of Daha (Burning) in the eyes, with Kandu (Itching). In severe cases, Pundarik can lead to Kushta (Skin Lesions) around the eyes, which may cause Gaurava (Heaviness) and Soola (Pain). Agnimandya (Poor Digestion) may also occur, reflecting the systemic involvement of the condition.
Diagnosis:
Wood’s Lamp Examination or KOH Preparation
Risk Factors:
- Dietary Factors: Overeating or consuming a diet high in greasy, spicy, or fried foods can contribute to Sidhma (digestive issues and constipation). A diet low in fiber or rich in processed foods can worsen symptoms.
- Lifestyle Factors: Sedentary habits, lack of physical activity, and stress can slow down digestion and lead to Sidhma. Poor sleep hygiene and irregular meal times also play a role in exacerbating digestive issues.
Complications:
- Bloating (Sidhma): Accumulation of gases in the stomach, leading to a feeling of fullness and discomfort.
- Digestive Issues (Agnimandya): Weak digestion causing bloating and indigestion. Pain (Ruja) – Abdominal pain or discomfort due to poor digestion and gas buildup.
Epidemeology:
Sidhma (Indigestion) is common in individuals with poor eating habits, irregular meal times, or excessive consumption of spicy or fatty foods. It is more prevalent in those with high-stress levels or gastrointestinal disorders like IBS.
