Ayurvedic Name: Udumbar Kusht
Description:
Udumbara Kushtha presents as coppery-red skin lesions with swelling and occasional pus or fluid discharge, resembling the fruit of the Udumbara tree (Ficus racemosa). It is primarily resulting from Pitta and Rakta vitiation, which leads to burning sensation, inflammation, and oozing wounds. In chronic cases, the skin may develop hardened patches. This condition is similar to Erythema, Dermatitis, or Erythroderma in modern medicine. Ayurvedic management includes cooling and blood-purifying herbs like Manjishtha, Neem, Guduchi, and Sariva, while Panchakarma therapies like Virechana (Purgation) and Raktamokshana (Bloodletting) are advocateed to remove toxins. Topical applications of Aloe Vera gel, Turmeric, and Triphala help soothe irritation.
Signs & Symptoms:
Udumbar Kushth presents with Kushta (Skin Lesions) in the form of reddish, raised patches, which may be painful and often spread to other areas. The skin becomes Rukshata (Dry) and rough due to the nature of the condition. There may be Kandu (Itching) in the affected areas, and the skin may also exhibit Shotha (Swelling). Vata dosha imbalance often causes a sensation of Gaurava (Heaviness) in the affected regions, leading to discomfort and stiffness. Agnimandya (Poor Digestion) is commonly seen, contributing to general weakness and poor nutrient absorption, which exacerbates the condition.
Diagnosis:
Skin Biopsy
Risk Factors:
- Dietary Factors: Overconsumption of acidic, spicy, and oily foods can disturb the balance of the skin, leading to Udumbar Kushth (skin diseases). A diet low in antioxidants or one rich in processed foods can weaken the skinâs immune function.
- Lifestyle Factors: Exposure to environmental irritants like pollution, toxins, and chemicals can increase susceptibility to skin diseases. Stress and lack of proper hygiene can worsen symptoms.
Complications:
- Skin Rashes (Udumbar Kusht): Itchy, inflamed patches on the skin that appear due to internal imbalances or infections.
- Excessive Sweating (Sveda): Increased perspiration due to skin irritation and infection.
- Scarring (Sharir Dagh): Permanent scars left behind after skin eruptions or lesions.
Epidemeology:
Udumbar kusht (Skin Diseases) occurs due to bacterial or fungal infections, with a higher incidence in individuals with weak immune systems or those exposed to poor living conditions. The condition is common in children and elderly individuals.
