Sanskrit Name:Śālmali

Devanagari Name:शल्मली

English Name: Silk Cotton Tree

Description:

The Shalmali tree thrives in tropical, humid environments and can grow up to 20 meters tall, with mature specimens reaching heights of up to 60 meters in wet tropical climates. Often referred to as the “king of the forest,” this tree is admired for its stunning flowers and impressive stature. It features deciduous leaves and a straight, sturdy trunk with a light grey hue, adorned with hard, sharp, conical thorns.

The Semal tree produces striking red flowers that are cup-shaped, either solitary or clustered at the branch tips. Each flower measures approximately 6 to 7 inches in length and 7 inches in width, composed of five petals that can be red, scarlet, or occasionally white and satiny in texture. The flowering period occurs between January and March.

From March to April, the tree bears ball-shaped fruits filled with a cotton-like substance. Initially, these immature fruits are light green, turning dark brown upon ripening. Local villagers collect the fruits of the Shalmali tree to harvest kapok, the cotton-like material.
