Description:
Sharpunkha (Tephrosia purpurea) is a perennial herb that can grow up to 50 cm in height. It features a woody stem that measures between 0.5 and 1.5 cm in thickness, is cylindrical in shape, and slightly angular near the top. The outer surface of the stem is green and smooth. The leaves are imparipinnate, consisting of 7 to 15 leaflets that are oblanceolate or obovate, measuring 1-2.8 x 0.3-1 cm. The base of the leaflets is cuneate, while the apex can be obtuse, emarginate, or truncate with a mucronate tip. Stipules are lanceolate and range from 3 to 6 mm in length. The flowers, approximately 7 mm long, grow in leaf-opposed pseudoracemes, with pedicels measuring 3-4 mm and bracts about 2 mm long. The calyx is 3-4 mm long, pubescent, with subulate lobes. The corolla is pink to purplish and orbicular, and the staminal tube is 4 mm long. The pods are linear-oblong, measuring 2.5-4 x 0.3-0.4 cm, containing 5-7 seeds that are ellipsoid and dark brown.
