Devanagari Name: सर्पगंधा

English Name: Indian Snakeroot

Description:

Sarpagandha, commonly referred to as ‘Indian snakeroot’, ‘Chandrabhaga’, or ‘Chhota Chandis’, is a significant medicinal herb found in the foothills of the Himalayas. It features long, slender, snake-like roots that are abundant in reserpine alkaloids, which are utilized in creating anti-hypertensive and sedative medications. Additionally, these roots are employed in Ayurvedic and other medical practices to treat various health issues.

The plant is effective in managing hypertension, anxiety, and insomnia. In traditional medicine, it is also taken orally for conditions such as snake bites, insect bites, fever, constipation, and malaria. Furthermore, it is believed to aid in the treatment of liver disease, rheumatoid arthritis, edema, and epilepsy. It serves as a uterine stimulant, promoting contractions of the uterus.

However, oral consumption of Indian snakeroot can lead to mild side effects due to the presence of trace harmful components, such as yohimbine. Most adverse reactions associated with Sarpagandha are generally mild. High doses may result in cardiovascular issues, including bradycardia (a slower heart rate) and hypotension (low blood pressure). Prolonged use may also lead to depression in some individuals.

Benefits:

– Helps lower high blood pressure by dilating blood vessels (rich in reserpine).

– Calms anxiety, stress, and supports better sleep.

– Useful in managing insomnia and certain mental health disorders.

– Balances aggravated Vata and Pitta doshas.
