Description:
Karkatshringi, also referred to as Shikari, is a medicinal tree known for its horn-like growths (Srngi) caused by insects such as Aphis (Dasia asdifactor). These galls are sizable, hollow, and cylindrical, possessing significant medicinal properties. This plant is indigenous to the Himalayan regions and various parts of India. It emits a strong odor and has a bitter flavor. The entire tree, particularly the galls, is used for numerous therapeutic purposes.
In Ayurveda, Karkatshringi is esteemed for its effectiveness in treating respiratory and gastrointestinal issues. It alleviates diarrhea by minimizing fluid loss and hindering the proliferation of harmful bacteria, thanks to its antidiarrheal and antimicrobial characteristics.
The herb’s Kashaya (astringent) quality further assists in curbing loose motions. Additionally, its antipyretic effect helps reduce fever by lowering body temperature.
For respiratory ailments such as cough, bronchitis, and congestion, Karkatshringi serves as an expectorant, helping to eliminate excess mucus from the respiratory system. Its property of balancing Kapha makes it especially beneficial for colds and bronchial conditions.
When applied topically, a paste created from Karkatshringi powder and rose water can alleviate blisters, inflammation, and itching while aiding in wound healing. Gargling with a Karkatshringi decoction can address bleeding gums due to its astringent and anti-inflammatory effects.
