Sanskrit Name: Kutaj

Devanagari Name: कुटज

English Name: Kutaj Herb

Description:

Kutaj (Holarrhena antidysenterica) is a prominent medicinal tree found in India and Southeast Asia. Every part of this plant, such as its bark, leaves, seeds, and flowers, is utilized in traditional Ayurvedic practices for its remarkable healing properties. It is particularly esteemed for its effectiveness in addressing digestive issues and is commonly recommended for diarrhea and dysentery, thanks to its strong astringent, antibacterial, and antidiarrheal characteristics.

In Ayurveda, Kutaj aids in balancing the Kapha and Pitta doshas, making it a beneficial treatment for ailments associated with excess heat and moisture in the body. Its Deepan (appetizer) and Pachak (digestive) qualities enhance digestion and help eliminate Ama (toxic undigested substances in the body). Additionally, Kutaj bark is recognized for its wound-healing and anti-inflammatory effects.

Consistent use of Kutaj can assist in managing conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), ulcerative colitis, and other inflammatory bowel diseases. When applied topically, Kutaj paste can be used on skin infections and wounds to facilitate quicker healing.

Given its strong astringent properties, it is advisable to use Kutaj in moderation and under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
