Description:
The Nagakesar tree, an evergreen species, can reach heights of up to 30 meters, with a buttressed base measuring around 90 cm in diameter. Its leaves, which are pendulous, range from 8 to 15 cm in length and are characterized as simple, narrow, lanceolate, opposite, and exhibit a dark grey to dark green hue.
The bark of the tree is a dark ash grey, while its branches are slender and glabrous. The tree produces bisexual flowers that measure 4 to 7 cm in diameter, featuring four white petals and yellow stamens. Its fruit is a globose to ovoid capsule containing 1 to 2 dark brown seeds, with the seeds having fleshy, oily cotyledons.
The flowering season occurs from March to July, and the fruits typically appear between October and November. The hardwood of the Mesua tree is a deep red color. Nagakesar is renowned for its medicinal and economic significance, making it a common herb within the Chaturjata group.
