Description:

Papaver somniferum, commonly known as the opium poppy, is an annual herb that can reach heights of up to 100 cm. This plant is originally from the Eastern Mediterranean but is now widely cultivated across Europe. It features a greyish-green hue, with its stems and leaves lightly covered in soft hairs. The leaves are lobed and clasp the stem at their base. The flowers typically boast four petals, which can be white, mauve, or red, and measure over 120 mm in diameter. The fruit takes the form of round capsules, and when the plant is damaged, it releases a white latex.

There are numerous species and subspecies of Papaver somniferum, each differing in characteristics such as flower color, shape and number of petals, quantity of blooms and fruits, seed color, and opium production.
