Description:

Colocynth, also known as Indravaruni or Bitter Apple, is a remarkable herbal plant recognized for its numerous beneficial properties. Scientifically referred to as Citrullus colocynthis, this plant belongs to the gourd family and is a relative of watermelon. It is indigenous to Africa and India, thriving in arid conditions due to its high drought resistance.

Colocynth can be either an annual or perennial plant, characterized by its irregular and rough stems. The leaves, measuring between 5 to 10 cm in length, are deeply lobed with three to seven lobes, featuring a triangular shape and multiple clefts. The upper surface of the leaves is a vibrant green, while the underside appears somewhat pale.

The flowers of the plant are yellow, solitary, and axillary, with a monoecious structure and five-lobed corollas. The fruits are pepo in nature, containing numerous seeds, a hard rind, and other traits typical of the gourd family. These globular fruits range from 4 to 10 cm in diameter and exhibit elliptical fissures. Initially small and green, the fruit turns completely yellow upon ripening. The ripe fruit features a hard rind, lightweight pulp that is easily breakable, spongy texture, and an intensely bitter flavor.

The seeds are small, approximately 6 mm in length, and vary in number. They are oval, compressed, and smooth, changing from dark brown to light yellow as they mature. Additionally, the plant has large roots with long, slender, tough, and rough stems that tend to climb over other herbs.
