Description:

Guduchi, also known as Giloy, is a well-regarded herbaceous vine and climbing shrub. This deciduous plant features a large, sprawling structure with numerous elongated twining branches and distinctive greenish-yellow flowers. The heart-shaped leaves are simple, alternate, and have long petioles that can reach up to 15 cm in length, exhibiting a dark green hue. Giloy produces unisexual flowers, where male flowers grow in clusters and female flowers are solitary. The succulent bark is grey or creamy white, while the wood is white, soft, and porous, displaying a yellow tint when freshly cut. The flowering season occurs in June, with fruits appearing in November; these drupe-shaped fruits turn red upon ripening and are found in small clusters of 1-3 smooth drupelets on thick stalks. The botanical name for Giloy is Tinospora cordifolia, an herbaceous vine celebrated for its significant medicinal properties in Ayurveda. Notably, Giloy that grows on neem trees is believed to possess superior medicinal benefits compared to those growing independently. It serves as an immune-modulating herb, and Guduchi satva, an extract from its stems, is highly valued for its medicinal qualities. Acharya Charaka classified this herb among the four Medhya Rasayana. The plant’s slender aerial roots have been utilized by Acharya Sushruta in wound suturing due to their rapid healing capabilities. Giloy is effective in reducing ama (toxins) and other microbes that contribute to fever and infections. It exhibits antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and immune-stimulating properties, containing various chemical compounds such as berberine, tinosporin, palmetin, mangoflorine, choline, ethanol, isocolumbin, tembetarine, and aporphine.
