Vasaka, also referred to as Vasa, is a tall, dense, and evergreen herbaceous shrub characterized by a trunk that features numerous long, opposite, and ascending branches. The bark of this shrub is yellow in color. Its leaves are lance-shaped, arranged oppositely, and have smooth edges with short petioles. These leaves possess a bitter taste and, when dried, transform to a dull brownish-green hue. They are notably rich in the alkaloid compound vasicine. The inflorescence consists of dense, large auxiliary spikes, with flowers that typically exhibit white and purple colors. The fruits are pubescent and have club-shaped capsules. Vasaka is recognized for its effectiveness in managing respiratory issues such as cough, cold, and asthma. Additionally, it serves as a potent antimicrobial agent and is known for its many cooling properties.
