Devanagari Name:एरंडा
English Name: Castor
Description:
Ricinus is a rapidly growing evergreen tree that can also be classified as a large herbaceous shrub, reaching heights of up to 5 meters and widths of 4.5 meters. Its glossy leaves vary in color from green to purplish and are palmate, featuring 5 to 11 deeply lobed segments with long petioles. The stems are characterized by hollow nodes and exhibit a green to reddish hue. Male flowers appear on the lower part of the spike, displaying yellow anthers, while the female flowers develop into egg-shaped capsules that are reddish-brown and covered in soft, flexible spines. Each capsule contains three seeds that are swollen, fat, and highly toxic, exhibiting brownish mottling. Common names for Ricinus include the castor oil plant, castor bean plant, and the hand of Christ, while in Hindi, it is referred to as Eranda and Gandharav Hasta. In Ayurvedic medicine, Ricinus is utilized in various formulations due to its medicinal benefits, serving as a potent laxative. Although all parts of the plant are toxic, the seeds contain ricin, a harmful compound. It is considered an effective remedy for tooth problems and constipation, and castor seed oil is particularly beneficial for rheumatism sufferers, making it a widely used treatment for children’s ailments.
Benefits:
Erand (Ricinus communis), commonly known as castor, is a potent herb in Ayurveda, renowned for its strong Vata-pacifying and purgative properties. Its primary use lies in its ability to relieve constipation and cleanse the colon, making it highly effective in detoxification therapies like Virechana (purgation). The castor oil extracted from its seeds lubricates the intestines and promotes smooth bowel movements. Beyond digestion, Erand is also known for easing joint pain, reducing inflammation in conditions like arthritis, and improving skin health due to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory qualities. It supports reproductive health, especially in balancing Apana Vayu, and is often used to relieve menstrual cramps and promote uterine cleansing in women. When used appropriately, Erand provides deep cleansing and nourishment, supporting overall vitality and balance in the body.
Medical Conditions(Relief):
Eranda, or castor oil, has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, beneficial in managing joint pain, arthritis, muscular aches, and digestive health. It acts as a natural laxative, relieving constipation. It also helps in treating skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis, and its detoxifying effects support liver health and metabolic functions.
Medical Conditions(Avoid):
Eranda should be avoided in individuals with diarrhea, IBS, or sensitive skin. Pregnant women should avoid its internal use, as it can stimulate uterine contractions. People with severe liver conditions should consult a doctor before use.
