Sanskrit Name:Kavā

Devanagari Name:कावा

English Name: Kava

Description:

Piper methysticum, commonly known as “kava kava,” is a plant indigenous to the South Sea Islands. For thousands of years, it has been utilized in ceremonial practices. The traditional preparation of this beverage involves grinding the plant’s roots into a paste. The name “kava” is derived from the Polynesian term “awa,” which translates to bitter. The root is rich in essential nutrients and organic compounds, including minerals, starch, dietary fiber, water, proteins, and kavalactones. To prepare the drink, the dried roots are either ground or chewed to release their active compounds, which are then mixed with water to extract the kavalactones effectively. For optimal effects, the mixture is consumed promptly. This preparation is known for its numerous health benefits.

Benefits:

Kava (Piper methysticum), though not native to Ayurveda, is a calming herb used in traditional Pacific Island medicine. It promotes relaxation, reduces anxiety, and supports restful sleep. With its nervine and muscle-relaxant properties, Kava can be integrated into Ayurvedic protocols for Vata imbalance and stress-related disorders under professional supervision.

Medical Conditions(Relief):

Kava is traditionally used for its calming and anxiolytic effects, making it effective for reducing stress, anxiety, and improving sleep. It also has muscle-relaxing properties.

Medical Conditions(Avoid):

Kava should be avoided in individuals with liver diseases or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
