Description:
Katuki, derived from the Sanskrit term meaning “bitter,” is a notable herb extensively utilized in Ayurvedic medicine. It belongs to the Plantaginaceae family, which encompasses over 200 genera and approximately 3,000 species. Scientifically, Katuki is referred to as Picrorhiza kurroa. This perennial herb features a long rhizome that measures between 2.5 to 12 cm in length and 0.3 to 1 cm in thickness, exhibiting slightly curvy and straight characteristics.
The rhizome has a greyish-brown hue with a coarse exterior, marked by furrows and scars from the roots. Within the cortex of the rhizome, there are 1 to 2 vascular bundles comprising xylem and phloem. The tips of the rhizome are developed into a bud, surrounded by a crown of leaves. The leaves of Katuki are arranged alternately and measure 5 to 10 cm in length, featuring terminal spikes.
The flowers have a calyx divided into five equal parts and possess 4 to 5 corolla segments. They are whitish with pale blue tones and grow on elongated flowering branches. Each corolla is approximately 5 mm long, bilobate, and less spreading. The plant has four stamens, which are inserted into the corolla and exhibit a slightly didynamous arrangement. The pollen grains are round, characterized by a perforated or incomplete tectum, and have a smooth or coarse corpus membrane.
The flowering season for Katuki occurs from June to August. The fruit is an acute capsule, tapering at the top, measuring around 12 mm in length, and opens into four valves. The seeds are numerous, ellipsoid in shape, and feature a thick, transparent seed coat. The roots are elongated and tubular, varying from 5 to 10 cm in length and 0.5 to 1 mm in diameter, displaying a curved form with longitudinal and dotted scars associated with the rhizomes.
