Sanskrit Name:Lavaṅga

Devanagari Name:लौंग

English Name: Clove

Description:

Lavanga (Syzygium aromaticum) is a medium-sized, bushy, evergreen tree that typically reaches heights of 8 to 20 meters. While various parts of the tree, such as the leaves and bark, emit pleasant aromas, it is primarily renowned for its fragrant flower buds. The leaves are simple, bright green, and glossy, with the undersides featuring aromatic oil glands. These elliptical leaves, which have petioles, can grow up to 13 cm long along numerous short branches. Flowers appear in small clusters, and the flower buds initially have a pale, glossy, and fleshy look, transitioning to green and eventually bright red as they mature. Each bud contains a long, narrow ovary measuring approximately 1.5 to 2.0 cm in length, with four small triangular sepals extending outward at one end. These sepals form a small ball of four overlapping petals that safeguard the developing flower components. Ultimately, the flower takes the shape of a clove, which is commonly used as a spice. The clove measures 1.5 to 2 cm long and features a long calyx, four unopened petals, and four sepals. The fruits are tiny capsules, about 6 mm in diameter, containing numerous angular seeds.
