Lata Karanja is a spiny shrub or woody vine that can grow up to 10 meters in length. Its leaves are alternate and bi-pinnate, often reaching nearly 1 meter in length, with a rachis that features stout, sharp, recurved spines. The leaflets are typically 4 to 6 in number, measuring between 2 to 5 cm long, and are characterized by an oblong shape and a hairy texture. The flowers, which are yellow and approximately 1 cm long, grow in axillary, simple, or panicled racemes. The fruits of Lata Karanja are elongated pods, measuring 5 to 7 cm, inflated and covered with slender spines, containing one or two seeds. The seeds are large, rounded or ovoid, hairy, and have a grey, shiny appearance.
Lata Karanja is a significant herb in Ayurveda. Its seeds have a unique property that causes them to heat up instantly when rubbed against a rough surface.
