Ushira, commonly referred to as Vetiver or Khus, is celebrated for its cooling properties during the summer months, effectively alleviating heat-related health issues. Its scientific designation is Vetiveria zizanioides. This perennial grass can reach heights of one to two meters, forming broad clumps. The tillers, or stems, emerge from rhizomes, which are compact and do not spread extensively. These robust tillers can grow up to 8 feet tall, with minimal lodging. The roots are stout, spongy, and aromatic, possessing a strong and compact structure that extends about 2 feet laterally and can reach depths of up to 8 feet.
The leaves of Ushira can grow between 120 to 125 cm in length and approximately 0.8 cm in width. They are characterized by their narrow, erect shape with rough edges. The plant’s inflorescence consists of panicles measuring 15 to 30 cm in length, with whorl branches that are 2.5 to 5.0 cm long, displaying a purple-brown hue. The spikelets vary in color from grey to green or purple, measuring 1/8 to 1/4 inch in length and featuring three stamens.
Ushira, also known as Khus Khus grass, is highly regarded in Ayurveda for balancing the pitta dosha and has historical significance, being referenced in ancient texts such as the Vedas, as well as in the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, where it is referred to as Gandhatrna.
