Bibhitaki, also known as Baheda, is a significant deciduous tree native to India, reaching heights of up to 30 meters. The tree features a straight trunk with a brownish-grey hue. Its leaves are long, alternate, and oval-shaped, typically clustered at the branch tips, measuring 7-14 cm in width and 10-12 cm in length. The flowers, which bloom in May, are simple and solitary, appearing in white or yellow and emitting a strong odor. The upper part of the plant is male, while the lower part is female. The fruit, which is grey and ovoid, contains sweet kernels encased in a hard shell, resembling Haritaki fruit but lacking ridges. Bibhitaki is a key ingredient in the traditional herbal formulation Triphala, which also includes Haritaki and Amalaki. This herb is known for its effectiveness in nourishing the body’s dhatus and balancing the tridosha. The pulp of the fruit supports eye health, promotes hair growth, and helps prevent hoarseness. Additionally, it possesses mild sedative properties and is used to alleviate insomnia. Bibhitaki is beneficial for all seven dhatus and yields remarkable results. The plant contains various chemical compounds, including sitosterol, ellagic acid, gallic acid, galloyl glucose, chebulagic acid, proteins, oxalic acid, tannins, galactose, glucose, mannitol, fructose, chebulagic acid, and rhamnose.
