Sanskrit Name: Ghee
Devanagari Name: घी
English Name: Clarified Butter
Description:
Ghee, referred to as Ghrta in Ayurveda, serves as an excellent Anupana (therapeutic vehicle) for delivering the benefits of herbs to the body’s deeper tissues. There are two varieties of Ghee: one derived from dairy milk and the other from vegetable oil, known as vanaspati Ghee or vegetable Ghee.
Dairy Ghee is considered pure and nutritious, being a rich source of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K). It strengthens bones and nourishes the body.
In Indian cuisine, Ghee is a staple milk product that aids in proper digestion and food absorption, helping to minimize toxin buildup in the body. It also supports weight loss by managing appetite and curbing overeating.
Ayurveda suggests that incorporating Ghee into your daily meals can bolster immunity against recurrent infections. Additionally, it alleviates constipation by encouraging bowel movements due to its laxative qualities. Ghee is beneficial for brain health, enhancing overall brain function because of its Vata and Balya properties.
When applied topically, Ghee promotes rapid wound healing and reduces swelling due to its anti-inflammatory effects. It also soothes burning sensations due to its Sita (cold) property and helps manage wrinkles while increasing skin moisture.
However, it is recommended to limit Ghee intake in cases of cold and cough due to its cooling effects. Overconsumption may lead to nausea and diarrhea.
