Sanskrit Name: Giloy

Devanagari Name: गिलोय

English Name: Heart Leave Moonseed

Description:

Giloy, often referred to as Amrita or Guduchi, is a highly esteemed herb in Ayurvedic medicine, known for its remarkable healing abilities. This plant, identifiable by its heart-shaped leaves similar to betel leaves, flourishes in tropical areas throughout India. Every part of the plant is utilized for medicinal purposes, but the stem is deemed the most effective due to its abundance of bioactive compounds.

Giloy has a bitter flavor (Titka) and is characterized by its hot potency (Ushna), transforming into a sweet (Madhura) and heavy (Guru) nature upon digestion. It is well-regarded for its Deepan (appetizer) and Pachan (digestive) qualities, aiding in digestion and relieving issues such as bloating, acidity, and excessive thirst. The herb’s ability to balance the three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—helps maintain bodily harmony.

Consistent use of Giloy can greatly enhance energy levels and boost immunity thanks to its Balya (strength-giving) and Rasayana (rejuvenating) properties. It is particularly beneficial for managing fevers, increasing platelet counts, and aiding recovery from dengue due to its antipyretic effects. Moreover, it assists in regulating blood sugar levels in diabetics and supports weight control by enhancing metabolism.

Giloy is also beneficial for the skin; its paste can be applied externally to speed up wound healing by encouraging collagen production and skin renewal. Giloy powder, juice, or Kadha (herbal tea) is commonly consumed to detoxify the body and promote overall health.
