Sanskrit Name:Kanchan

Devanagari Name:कंचन

English Name: Kanchan Herb

Description:

Kanchan, also known as Bauhinia variegata, is a medium-sized deciduous tree with characteristic twin-lobed leaves, orchid-like fragrant purple-pink flowers, and elongated flat pods. It is commonly found in the sub-Himalayan regions and dry deciduous forests throughout India. The bark, flower buds, and roots are used in Ayurveda, where Kanchan is known for its lekhana (scraping), shothahara (anti-inflammatory), and gandamala-nashaka (anti-glandular swelling) properties. It is a major ingredient in the classical formulation Kanchnar Guggulu used to treat thyroid disorders, lymphatic congestion, and tumors.

Benefits:

The key therapeutic benefits of Buddhist Bauhinia (Bauhinia variegata) include its effectiveness in treating skin diseases, ulcers, and leprosy. It is known to soothe gastrointestinal issues such as dysentery and diarrhea, and it can also help in arresting hemorrhoids.

Medical Conditions(Relief):

Kanchan is known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and detoxifying properties. It is commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat thyroid disorders, especially hypothyroidism, as it helps regulate thyroid function. Kanchan also supports the lymphatic system by reducing swelling and promoting detoxification. It is beneficial in treating conditions like goiter, cysts, and nodules due to its ability to dissolve abnormal tissue growth. Additionally, Kanchan is used for its antimicrobial properties, which help fight infections.

Medical Conditions(Avoid):

Kanchan should be avoided during pregnancy due to its mild uterine-stimulating effects. People with thyroid disorders should consult a healthcare provider before using Kanchan, especially if they are on thyroid medication, as it may interact with these treatments. It may also cause mild gastrointestinal discomfort in some individuals.
