Sanskrit Name:Kupilu

Devanagari Name:कुपिलु

English Name: Strychnine Tree

Description:

Kupilu (Strychnos nux-vomica) is a medium-sized tree characterized by its short and twisted trunk. The wood is dense, white, and exceptionally hard, making it durable. The tree features irregular branches that are coated with smooth, ash-grey bark, while the young shoots exhibit a dark green hue. Its leaves are simple and opposite, measuring approximately 4 inches in length and 3 inches in width, with a shiny and smooth texture on both surfaces. The flowers, which are tiny, funnel-shaped, and greenish-white, grow in small terminal cymes and emit an unpleasant odor. The fruit is a striking orange, similar in size to a large apple, encased in a tough rind. Inside, the flesh is soft and white, containing a jelly-like substance that surrounds five seeds, which are covered in soft, woolly fibers. Once the fruit ripens, the seeds are extracted from the pulp. These seeds are flattened and disc-shaped, adorned with hairs on their sides. The hard, dark grey seeds are then cleaned, dried, sorted, and purified for medicinal applications. Kupilu is indigenous to the tropical and subtropical regions of Southeast Asia and Australia. In India, it thrives in the moist deciduous and semi-evergreen forests of Maharashtra, particularly across the Konkani and Sahyadri foothills of the Western Ghats, up to an altitude of 400 meters.

Kupilu is known for its powerful detoxifying and anti-inflammatory properties. It is often used in treating skin conditions, fever, and digestive disorders.

Medical Conditions(Avoid):

Kupilu should be avoided due to its toxic properties, especially in large doses. It should be avoided by pregnant women and individuals with heart conditions.
