Madanphala, scientifically known as Randia dumetorum, is a sizable deciduous shrub that can reach heights of up to 5 meters. Its leaves are simple, ovate, and exhibit a wrinkled, shiny texture with a pubescent appearance. The flowers are solitary, white, and emit a honey-like fragrance, typically found at the ends of short branches. The fruit is globose, measuring between 1.8 to 4.5 cm in length, and features smooth skin with longitudinal ribs, turning yellow when ripe. Each fruit contains numerous compressed seeds embedded within a dark, foul-smelling pulp. The seeds, referred to as ‘Madanphala,’ are 0.4 to 0.6 cm long, smooth, brown, and very hard. This herb is widely used in Ayurveda, particularly in the Panchkarma procedure known as Vamana or vomiting therapy, and is recognized for its various health benefits. There are two main species of this plant: Randia dumetorum and Randia uliginosa.
