Ayurvedic Name: Palitya
Description:
Palitya is premature graying of hair, often due to excess Pitta dosha. Factors like stress, irregular sleep, excessive spicy or sour foods, and a lack of proper nutrition contribute to this condition. Ayurveda advocates a diet rich in cooling foods, herbal treatments like bhringraj oil, and lifestyle modifications to balance Pitta and nourish hair follicles.
Signs & Symptoms:
- Khalitya (Hair Loss / Baldness): Gradual thinning of hair, leading to noticeable bald patches.
- Vata Dosa: Vāta disturbances lead to dryness and thinning of hair.
- Pitta Dosa: Excessive Pitta can cause early hair loss and thinning.
- Rakta: Imbalance in Rakta can lead to reduced nourishment to the hair follicles.
Diagnosis:
Hair Analysis or Thyroid Function Test
Risk Factors:
- Dietary Factors: Overeating, especially heavy and greasy foods, can increase toxins (ama) in the body, leading to digestive issues and causing the body to store fat improperly, leading to obesity. Diets high in sugar, refined carbohydrates, and processed foods can contribute to weight gain and metabolic imbalances.
- Lifestyle Factors: A sedentary lifestyle, lack of exercise, and inadequate sleep can cause hormonal disruptions that lead to weight gain and fatty tissue accumulation. Stress also plays a significant role in obesity and metabolic syndrome.
Complications:
- Premature Graying (Palitya): Early appearance of gray hair due to deficiencies, poor nutrition, or genetic factors.
- Hair Weakness (Kesha Kshaya): Fragile hair that breaks easily, often linked with poor diet, stress, or illness.
- Scalp Dryness (Twak Rukshata): Dryness and flakiness of the scalp leading to hair weakening and loss.
Epidemeology:
Palitya (Premature Graying) is often seen as an age-related condition, but it can also occur earlier due to genetic factors, nutritional deficiencies, or lifestyle habits. Stress and hormonal imbalances, particularly in women, can also contribute to early graying. The prevalence of premature graying is higher in individuals with a family history of early onset of gray hair.
