English Name: Fennel Seeds

Description:

Vidanga, also known as Embelia ribes, is a climbing shrub found in the tropical regions of India and Southeast Asia. The plant has small, oval-shaped leaves and produces black berries that are used for medicinal purposes. Vidanga is best known for its anthelmintic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Vidanga is primarily used to treat parasitic infections, particularly intestinal worms, by acting as a natural dewormer. It is also used for digestive health, treating gas, bloating, indigestion, and improving digestive fire (Agni). Vidanga is effective in treating respiratory issues, such as cough, asthma, and bronchitis, by clearing mucus from the airways and reducing inflammation. The herb helps balance Vata and Pitta doshas, promoting digestive health, skin health, and overall well-being.

Benefits:

Fennel, known as Mishreya or Sanuf in Sanskrit, offers several therapeutic benefits. It effectively relieves digestive disorders such as constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, flatulence, and stomach spasms. Additionally, it eases menstrual cramps and is used in massage oils to alleviate painful joints. The volatile oils in Fennel promote the secretion of digestive enzymes, enhancing overall digestive health.

Medical Conditions(Relief):

Saunf, or fennel, is known for its digestive properties. It is used to relieve indigestion, bloating, gas, and flatulence by helping to relax the muscles in the gastrointestinal tract and promoting the passage of gas. Fennel is also a natural diuretic and is used to promote kidney function and reduce water retention. It is commonly used to boost milk production in breastfeeding mothers and is considered a galactagogue. Additionally, fennel has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which help in reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in the body.

Medical Conditions(Avoid):

Saunf should be avoided by individuals with a known allergy to fennel or any members of the Apiaceae family. It may interact with hormone-related medications and should be used cautiously in women with estrogen-sensitive conditions such as breast cancer. People with low blood pressure should consume fennel cautiously, as it may lower blood pressure further.
