Sanskrit Name:Tejohva

Devanagari Name:तेजोह्वा

English Name: Tejohva

Description:

Tejohva, also known as ‘Winged prickly ash,’ ‘Timur,’ or ‘Toothache tree,’ is a medicinal native plant found in North America. This small, hardy tree can reach heights of up to 6 meters, with branches measuring approximately 1.2 cm in length. Its leaves are notably trifoliate, featuring winged leaf stalks, and the leaflets are elliptical to ovate, with a lace-like texture, sharp edges, and teeth.

The plant produces tiny yellow flowers that emerge from the axils of the leaves, characterized by six to eight sepals and the absence of petals. Male flowers typically contain 6 to 8 stamens with prominent anthers, contributing to their yellow hue. Female flowers have 1 to 3 cells and are pale red, splitting at both ends when ripe. The fruit is attractive, sub-globose, reddish-brown, and contains a single seed within a follicle, with the seeds being shiny black and globose in shape.

Scientifically known as Zanthoxylum alatum, tejohva is recognized for its medicinal benefits. In Ayurveda, it is referred to as tejohva and tumur, and it is believed to balance two doshas: kapha and vata. Vata governs blood circulation, respiration, blinking, and heartbeat, while kapha regulates water supply to the body, skin health, and immune function. Consequently, tejohva is thought to alleviate various health issues related to digestion, circulation, immunity, and skin conditions.

All parts of the plant exhibit stomachic, anthelmintic, and carminative properties. Fruit extracts are known to address fever, dental issues, intestinal worms, and dyspepsia due to their antiseptic, deodorant, and disinfectant qualities, which also help repel flies. The bark is utilized for relief from gum issues, asthma, diabetes, and snake bites.

Tejohva (Zanthoxylum armatum), also known as Tumburu, is a pungent herb used to stimulate digestion, relieve dental issues, and clear respiratory congestion. It improves appetite, pacifies Kapha and Vata, and is often used in oral health care.

Medical Conditions(Relief):

Tejohva is used to treat digestive issues, promote detoxification, and support respiratory health. It is also known for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.

Medical Conditions(Avoid):
