Ayurvedic Name: Mutraghat
Description:
Mutraghat refers to urinary retention or difficulty in passing urine. According to Ayurveda, it is resulting from an imbalance in Vata dosha, which leads to obstruction in the urinary tract. It can result from factors such as excessive consumption of dry foods, suppression of natural urges, or an aggravated nervous system. Symptoms include painful urination, incomplete emptying of the bladder, and swelling in the lower abdomen. Treatment includes herbal diuretics, warm oil massages, and dietary changes to pacify Vata.
Signs & Symptoms:
- Mutrakrcchra (Urinary Tract Disorders): Painful urination, burning sensation while passing urine.
- Vata Dosa: Vāta derangement may lead to urinary retention and pain during urination.
- Pitta Dosa: Increased heat in the urinary system causing burning during urination.
- Kapha Dosa: Can cause sluggish urinary flow or difficulty in passing urine.
Diagnosis:
Bladder Ultrasound or Urodynamic Study
Risk Factors:
- Dietary Factors: Consuming heavy or hard-to-digest foods, like fried or greasy items, can contribute to difficulty urinating by disturbing the urinary system. Excessive intake of spicy, acidic, or salty foods can irritate the urinary tract, making it harder for the body to pass urine. Drinking alcohol or caffeinated beverages can have a diuretic effect, leading to dehydration and increasing the risk of urinary retention.
- Lifestyle Factors: Holding urine for long periods can cause the bladder to become overstretched, increasing the discomfort during urination. High levels of stress and lack of physical activity can weaken the urinary system, making it more susceptible to issues like Mutraghat.
Complications:
- Difficulty Urinating (Mutraghat): Pain or difficulty during urination, often due to blockages, infections, or excessive fluid retention.
- Urinary Retention (Mutra Sankoch): Inability to fully empty the bladder, leading to discomfort and increased risk of urinary tract infections.
- Painful Urination (Mutra Shula): Persistent pain or burning sensation during urination due to inflammation or infection.
Epidemeology:
Mutraghat (Difficulty Urinating) is often linked to urinary retention or blockages in the urinary tract, affecting individuals with kidney disorders, prostate enlargement, or neurological conditions that affect bladder control.
