Description:
Valerian is a traditional medicinal herb commonly found in moist environments, native to Asia and Europe, and also prevalent in the northern regions of the United States and Canada. The Indian Valerian, a wild herb, thrives in the high altitudes of the temperate Himalayas. This aromatic plant can grow up to 50 cm tall, featuring clusters of white or pale pink flowers at the stem’s axis. It has multiple stems ranging from 17 to 40 cm in length, and its leaves are compound and radical in structure. Classified as a perennial flowering plant, it belongs to the Valerianaceae family.
The root of the valerian plant is the primary medicinal component, known for its antioxidant, antimicrobial, sedative, anti-inflammatory, and potential neuroprotective properties. It is particularly beneficial for individuals experiencing sleep disorders, such as insomnia, as it may help decrease sleep latency. The root is rich in essential micro and macronutrients, including phosphorus, calcium, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, and chromium, as well as vital vitamins like beta-carotene and various B vitamins.
Key phytochemical compounds are extracted from the root, with the main active components being iridoid molecules, such as valepotriates and valerenic acid. Notably, high concentrations of valepotriates are found in species like V. officinalis and V. wallichi, which also demonstrate central nervous system activity. Additionally, the plant contains alkaloids, flavonoids, amino acids, and volatile oils.
